The job of reforming and extending a school in more than double its current area, required a new wide-scale interpretation of the project and the way it fits into its surroundings. From an initial state where autonomous buildings were placed without any apparent criteria, we propose to consolidate it into a single building that, by means of its letter “T” shape, allows the absorption of the existing school unit “Fuensalida” (1980s).
While the current entrance keeps the administration, in the connection between the original building and the extension appears a new central covered space which joins the two playgrounds and provides access to both the infant school and the primary school and the communal services. The infant school is structured in the shape of a comb with the courtyards opening out towards the neighbouring park.
Low-cost and long-lasting construction systems have been chosen for the extension.
The criteria for intervention on the existing building are to restore and take advantage of everything that could be recovered, as opposed to small new plant interventions that range from changing doors, distribution changes, new installation layouts lations or small volumetric expansions that contrast strongly with the pre-existence. In all actions, whether rescue or superimposition, an effort has been made to show the logic of each constructive system and its materiality.
